Small Talk filmmaker Hui-chen Huang sets off on a personal journey to break her family's silence and unlock a devastating secret that has kept her mother, a detached, lesbian Taoist priestess, a virtual stranger.

Huang's documentary, as generous as it is cathartic, offers moments of essential comic relief amid long takes of silence. By way of interviews with a few of her mother's many ex-girlfriends, Huang discovers a mother she never knew, a woman whose path was shaped by a homophobic society and who suffered an abusive past. Huang's process of discovery ultimately allows her to speak her own truth, in a painful, final twist.

Small Talk is the first film from Taiwan to screen as part of the prestigious Panorama section at the Berlinale. Born of familial pain, the documentary is as timely as ever, with Taiwan mere steps away from becoming the first Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage.
