This intimate documentary chronicles singer Chavela Vargas's turbulent life, ranging from an affair with Frida Kahlo to Vargas's struggles with alcoholism and violence. Though considered a national treasure in her adopted homeland of Mexico, Chavela's refusal to conform to female gender norms cost her dearly.

Using interviews with former lovers and friends - among them Pedro Almodovar, who helped champion Chavela's late-in-life comeback - and archival footage of performances and interviews with Chavela herself, directors Catherine Gund and Daresha Kyi paint a delicate portrait of a decidedly complicated woman, an irreplaceable artistic force and lesbian icon whose voice manifests heartbreak, defiance and ultimate triumph.

Much like the Oscar-winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man, Chavela brings us face-to-face with an artist who operated on the fringe, and whose eventual acclaim was so richly deserved.
