Emi has recently discovered that her mother is in love with another woman, and Emi’s not handling it well. She retreats to the community, where she was born, to stay with her father and his new family and to spend time with her maternal grandmother. Things are much less confusing at her father’s, at least until her extremely intriguing stepsister shows up. Emi soon begins to understand why her mother living her life authentically was so difficult to face.

Not willing to let his car go without him, the two set off on a journey that will forever change them and how they see the world.

As the year progresses so does Suzano’s illness and the three have withdrawn to a ranch where they capture on camera their attempts to study the disease, amid moments of both fear and joy.

With keen affection and an understanding of its characters, Mars One explores the hopes and expectations, the anxieties and foibles, of a Brazilian family against the backdrop of the 2018 election of Brazil’s far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro.

Early in Mars One, university student Eunice makes her way through a sweaty nightclub toward another woman, making it clearer than ever that she’s probably not destined for the life her family expects. But Eunice’s rapport with her supportive working-class parents doesn’t make coming out any easier. Meanwhile, younger brother Deivinho shows more interest in becoming an astrophysicist than the soccer star his father wants him to be.

Everyone wants something from high school senior Jake: his father is pushing him to try out for the basketball team – an abandoned dream of his own – and his girlfriend wants to take their relationship to the next level.

But it’s not until Aleks, an openly gay teen with a love for basketball, moves in across the street that Jake begins to struggle with his own desires. To get closer to Aleks, Jake devotes himself to making the basketball team – only to realize it’s not basketball he really wants. Meanwhile, Jake finds out that his father is having an affair, which leaves him questioning his entire family foundation.
