Event: The New Girlfriend
The New GIrlfriend (Une nouvelle amie)
François Ozon | France | 2014 | 107:00
The latest film from French auteur Ozon is a layered meditation on friendship, loss, desire and identity that skilfully shifts between psychological drama and playful farce.
Claire (Anaïs Demoustier) is grieving the recent loss of her lifelong best friend, who has left behind a husband, David (Romain Duris), and a newborn baby. Battling through a fog of depression and a lack of responsiveness from her own husband, she feels an obligation to support David and help take care of his child.
When Claire unexpectedly drops by at David’s suburban home she makes a startling discovery about the form his grief has taken. At first shocked and resistant, then progressively seduced, she ultimately finds an outlet for her own crippling anguish and repressed desires in David’s new and carefree expression.
Based on a short story by Ruth Rendell, and shot in a lush, suspenseful style reminiscent of Hitchcock, The New Girlfriend showcases superb performances from Demoustier and Duris. Ozon delivers delectable entertainment that offers pointed observations about gender, class and consumerism in a deliciously subversive story.
