CALL HER GANDA
Best Documentary Film, Inside Out 2018 Toronto Film Festival

“My life has value,” Julita Laude proudly states, quoting her beloved daughter, Jennifer. In documenting Jennifer Laude's life, Call Her Ganda magnifies that value in the face of transphobia and postcolonial dissent.
In 2014, Jennifer Laude was murdered by an American marine. This senseless crime revealed the day-to-day dangers that trans women face in the Philippines, compounded by American imperialism. The Visiting Forces Agreement made prosecution of her killer difficult. Three women – trans activist and journalist Meredith Talusan, lawyer Virgie Suarez, and Jennifer’s mother Julita – search for answers while fighting and seeking justice for Jennifer.
Festival favourite PJ Raval provides heartbreaking insight into one woman behind the tragic statistics.
