Dir. Young LEE
KOREA 2015 (98:00)

“You do not belong to this world!”

Winner of the Special Jury Award at the 2015 DMZ International Documentary Film Festival, TROUBLERS reflects South Korea’s culture of phobia, as seen through the eyes of a lesbian filmmaker. Living in South Korea as an LGBTQ makes one an easy target for hatred. They are perceived as dangerous to the nation’s safety, future, and well-being. In Lee’s pursuit for sustainability of a marginalized life, she encounters Lee Muk, an ordinary 70-year-old Korean living a double life as “Mr. Pants”; and a Japanese lesbian couple, Ten and Non, who are also living precarious lives. As a growing number of citizens become targets of “witch-hunting” in South Korea, the true faces of haters are slowly revealed.
