Favela Gay
Dir. Rodrigo Felha
Brazil 2014 (72:00)

Favela Gay tells the life stories of the LGBT community in the favelas (slums) of Rio de Janeiro. It is not something out of the ordinary, after all, gays are everywhere, whether in the favelas or on the streets of the city. The film deals with the subject with the participation of other signs – drug dealing, evangelical churches and neighborhood. It also discusses about common issues around homosexual and transsexual themes: homophobia, prejudice, acceptance of the family, work and everyday life in society. Despite the obstacles placed in their community every day, each character talks about how they reinvented their life stories through music, dance, politics and study. The documentary goes through scenarios such as Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, the first Gay Parade in Rocinha, the “Gaymado” game and the classic funk party from the favelas.
