Desiree Akhavan
USA 2014 (86:00)

Shirin is struggling to become an ideal Persian daughter, politically correct bisexual and hip young Brooklynite. But she’s not quite Persian enough, not quite gay enough, not quite anything enough. She fails miserably in her attempt at all identities. After a toxic breakup with her girlfriend Maxine, Shirin (Desiree Akhavan) desperately throws herself into the dating scene in hopes of finding a man or woman able to bury her resentments. But with each bad date, she's forced to confront a host of real-world issues she previously ignored, including masking her bisexuality from her Iranian parents.

Known for her deadpan satire and drawing comparisons to HBO’s Girls and Annie Hall, writer-director-actress Desiree Akhavan single-handedly also raises the bar for queer comedies in this festival favourite.
